The owner of the park was so excited when we heard we were from Australia that he jumped up and down and slapped Helena on the back. He then proceeded to take us for local walk which was very generous of him but made Helena, who is a crime story enthusiast, a little nervous, especially when he showed us what looked like shrines of different things - didn't have the camera so unable to take photos which was a shame. BUT, they were a little strange and Helena started to imagine his big solid mate creeping up from behind and making her into a little shrine!!!! Creeping feeling but as it turned out he seemed quite harmless and just wanted to spend time with us (or me) and Grant would say. !!
We met up with a herd of friendly and nosey cows who each had their bell ringing. We tried to share some sugar cubes but they were a little reluctant to try our little taste sensation. It was great to get so close to them.
Next day, we woke to the sounds of rain on the roof - magic and drove a short distance to the Krimmler Wasserfallweg waterfall which is in Austrias World Heritage Listed area and absolutely stunning.
How straight the trees are ? |
We walked up for about 2 hours and enjoyed seeing the various waterfalls - lots of water and strong winds made the display quite something to see.
The waterfalls were absolutely amazing - with the cold water spray cold but refreshing. We both enjoyed it.
We walked back down and thankful that Grant had remembered our Alpine Hiking Poles which made life a little easier for all.
HALLSTATT
Leaving the waterfalls we travelled for quite some time before we realised that our GPS was playing tricks and sending us the absolutely long, long way to our next destination which was Hallstatt in Austria. It is a great little town - and has an incredible history due to success of it's sale mine - i.e. - it's white gold mine
Walked around the village our first evening there followed by early morning visit the next day at which time we visited Museum Hallstaff which was a 7000 journey through the ages. Absolutely fasinating and worth seeing. Grant had one or two beers while Helena had her hair cut.
Fabulous except it started pouring as she left the salon, the work of art created by the hairdresser became a wet ruin. What a shame. At least if looked OK for a minute or two. !! Our new leather jackets became absolutely drenched along with our hair, jeans and hats!!
The following day, Helena had a colour put into her hair - think it's all over but can't see the back!
Relaxed and ready ..... |
Not too sure about this.... |
I asked for a trim......hopefully it'll grow |
Helena had a lovely morning, and really enjoyed spending time talking with Sharon at the Desigual Clothing Boutique. Her shop is just fabulous. Retail therapy at it's best with several new purchases made.
Reminded me of our chooks in Australia |
Something for everyone ..... |
Headed off afterlunch and drove to the Tennengebinge range of mountains and visited the largest ice cave in the world. (NO photos allowed in the cave)
It was really steep ! |
You couldn't see around the corners ..... |
Looking down from the cable car !! |
In ta
In tact and ready to go ..... |
Quite a nerve raking drive down the mountain in the van |
We walked for about 50min. uphill before we reached the entry and then walked 730+ steps in the cave so good exercise for the day. The guided tour was interesting and gave a historical and scientific background of the caves. It was an amazing experience and we were grateful for the extra clothing we wore. Temperature was about 1 degree.
Driving back to Germany we stayed overnight at Unterau before leaving the next morning for the Salzburg airport. .
